“The unique icon of our unique land”
The artichoke is one of the most best-selling winter crops of the Agricola Campidanese PO: sold loosely, in bunches or packaged as ìArtichoke Heartsî, this vegetable is very popular due to its great taste and flavour characteristics. Italy produces annually about 500,000 tonnes of artichokes, with 21% produced just in Sardinia, a region with a centuries-old tradition in the cultivation of these vegetables. Our local farmers pay continuous attention to the introduction of new innovative cultivation techniques and to the research into new cultivars. The artichoke is cultivated in areas which have the most suited conditions for this vegetable, located in various parts of Sardinia: Campidano di Oristano, Campidano di Cagliari and the Coghinas valley, all these areas are ideal for the good growth of the flower heads.

Production wheel
Grown with integrated cultivation techniques, the harvested crop is the product of the Sardinian land and its sun, the professionalism and the passion which characterise the producers of the Agricola Campidanese P.O. Recently, the artichokes of the Orto di Eleonora have also become GLOBALG.A.P. certified, meaningful proof of our companyís attention to good agricultural practices in all stages of production to safeguard the environment and nature. Before packaging, we thoroughly clean the artichokes, removing the outer bracts, and then carefully place them inside plastic trays wrapped in a transparent film with a variable number of flower heads, according to customer request. This way, we give great value to a quality product which is especially appreciated by the consumer because it is ready for use and does not require further cleaning. More than 90 varieties of artichokes are cultivated around the world, divided into thorny and non-thorny varieties. The first variety includes the SPINOSO SARDO while non-thorny varieties include the ROMANESCO, THEMA, TEROM and OPERA artichokes which are all cultivated by the Agricola Campidanese P.O.
HEALTH BENEFITS
The artichoke has good nutritional qualities which make it an important element of the characteristic Mediterranean diet: in fact, it gives energy and has a detoxifying and diuretic effect, particularly indicated for people who suffer from asthenia and over-exhaustion, kidney and liver problems or lack of iron in the blood.
THORNY SARDINIAN ARTICHOKE
The thorny Sardinian artichoke has a slightly compact conical head with a diameter varying between 10 and 13 cm and an average weight of 130-200 grams. The outer bracts are green with violet shades, have an elongated shape and a pointed top ending with a large yellow spine. The thorny artichoke is widely used in recipes for the special consistency of its tender and crunchy bracts and for its unique, intense and strong taste. The peculiarity of this variety is that it can be eaten raw, both the head and the stem, seasoned with just some extra virgin olive oil and a pinch of salt.
