“Wrinkled but crunchy and very sugary”
The melon is widely cultivated in the plain of Campidano and in general in all parts of the island of Sardinia, so much so that recent palaeobotanical evidence suggests that the Sardinian people of the Nuragic era were the first European farmers to grow melons. The long tradition in the cultivation of this crop, the particularly suitable soil and the ideal climate allow to produce fruits with unique taste and flavour characteristics. The melons produced by the Orto di Eleonora are special because of their high Brix level, their durability and their unmistakable scent, the guarantee of a high quality product. We always use advanced integrated pest management techniques in our fields to safeguard the environment and the health of our workers; we guarantee the traceability of each single product lot throughout all phases of the supply chain.
The Piel de Sapo melon is oval with a green or slightly spotted rind, soft or rough. The pulp is white, crunchy and very sugary; the average weight is between 1.8 and 3 kilograms. This variety has excellent shelf life (2-3 months).
Compared to the watermelon, the melon has more calories, more mineral salts, more vitamins and less water. It is the ideal fruit to eat when you spend the entire morning in the sun because it is refreshing and it helps to reintegrate the loss of mineral salts due to sweating. In addition, it is very rich in potassium which is good for your heart. Its main quality is the high concentration of vitamins A and C: just 200 grams of melon, in fact, contain 60 mg of vitamin C which is good to strengthen the immune system and protect the skin.
